Chalo! Chidiya Dekhein!
A walk to discover, observe and build friendships with the birds around us.

Chalo! Chidiya Dekhein! is an exploratory bird walk with children aged 12–18 from marginalised communities in Delhi, particularly children whose parents work in domestic and labour sectors.

The idea is to create an opportunity for children to connect with the natural world around them, beginning with something as familiar yet often unnoticed as birds. Through this walk, we will begin with a simple introduction to birds and explore the birds that share our urban spaces. What birds do we see around our homes, neighbourhoods and streets? Which ones are we familiar with? Why do some birds seem to be disappearing from our everyday surroundings? What makes a bird a bird?

Using binoculars, we will observe birds more closely, noticing their colours, shapes, sizes, movements and behaviours. We will also pause to listen to their calls and sounds, and try to understand what they might be communicating. Along the way, we will reflect on the similarities and differences between birds and ourselves, how each bird has its own characteristics, just as every one of us does, and yet we share the same spaces and ecosystems. Rather than focusing only on identifying different bird species, this walk is about slowing down, observing, asking questions, sharing experiences, stories, laughter, and developing a sense of curiosity towards the living world around us.
